What is Bot Traffic ? Detection and Block Their Attacks



According to the 2024 Imperva Bad Bot Report by Thales, a cybersecurity leader, nearly half (49.6%) of all global internet traffic was generated by bots, marking a 2% increase compared to 2022. Therefore, I am gonna discuss further to this bot traffic usage and their affects on website performance. 

What is Bot Traffic ?

Bot Traffic is a software/ website or an app designed to do a wide range of activities : collect analytics data, increase internet traffic, click fraud or illegal activities. This bot can mimics behavior of human users, executing repetitive tasked. However, the old SEO tactics previously used by webmasters to manipulate search engines are now almost dead.



Mostly, company use this bot to drive up the number of page views, potentially increasing the site’s ranking on search engines. The worst usage of bot traffic could be clicking repeatedly on competitors ads to drain their advertising budget. They can launch large-scale attacks like brute-force attacks, DDoS campaigns, password stuffing attacks, and other very bad types of hacking.

Knowing Types of Bad Bots


  1. Imposter bots: this bots can create fraud websit visitors by replicate human behavior. Their goal is to get around internet security, and most of the time they are behind DDoS attacks.

  2. Click/ Download Bots: This bot is use to do click/ download count spamming which create a huge damage to advertising budgets and mixup data analytics. 

  3. Scraper Bots: the main usage of this bot is to collect publisher’s content. They can steal you valuable content like posts ( snippets, tips, images) or even lists of products with price.


Bot traffic can effectively destroy businesses if they don't learn how to identify and manage and filter bot traffic. I realized that if you website are attacked by bots, here are some main symptoms :

  • Conversion decreases

Putting a CAPTCHA on the sign-up or download form is one of the easiest and most popular ways to spot fake traffic. This helps a lot with stopping download and spambots.
